The Ties That Bind
So I am leaving work Friday afternoon. Two people on the elevator are joking with each other about their keyrings and all the ’stuff’ they have to carry for work now: An RSA SecurID, Blackberry, cellphone, laptop etc.
They weren’t complaining, just commiserating in a sort of resigned “that’s the way it is” manner. I was mortified! Didn’t they see the irony in how accessible, wired, and controlled they were? And they appeared OK with it!!
Why do we have all this stuff? Does it help? Or do the productivity gains using multiple technologies disappear under the literal and figurative weight of keeping all that gear running/syncing/charged up?
